certificación de entrenadores

Law 2210 of 2022 created the legal framework for the practice of sports training activities in Colombia. Among its provisions, it established that sporting trainers must be registered in the National Registry of Sporting Trainers, which is certified through the presentation of an official document for this purpose.

To obtain this document, it is necessary to:

  1. Have an academic degree such as university professional in sports, physical education, or related fields, granted by a Higher Education Institution officially recognized by the State.
  2. Have a degree of technological or technical-professional level in sports or sports training, granted by a Higher Education Institution officially recognized by the Government, or from the SENA, in accordance with current local regulations.
  3. Have an academic degree as it was mentioned above, granted by Higher Education Institutions from other countries, equivalent to those duly granted in Colombia, provided that these degrees have been validated by the local relevant authorities, in accordance with current local regulations on this matter.

This regulation also acknowledges that, to this date, there are sporting trainers who do not hold any of the aforementioned degrees. In this regard, these individuals must therefore obtain a certification of suitability as a sporting trainer, which will be issued by the Colombian College of Physical Educators and Related Professions (COLEF), in accordance with the following requirements:

  1. Be over 18 years of age.
  2. Prove work experience as a sporting trainer for no less than 12 months.
  3. Approve the suitability evaluation in one of the performance categories for trainers.

Notwithstanding the foregoing, it is important to highlight that the law includes two key conditions for obtaining this certification:

  1. This registration will be temporary, valid for up to 5 years, and may be renewed for an additional 5 years.
  2. The maximum deadline to obtain this certification is 3 years from the date the law is in force, that is, on May 23, 2025.
