CORTOLIMA issued a resolution announcing that it will not grant environmental licenses or permits for mining activities within the jurisdiction of the municipality of Cajamarca. The resolution also provides that all previously issued environmental licenses and permits will be reviewed and, where applicable, will be revoked.


CORTOLIMA will not grant new environmental licenses for mining activities in Cajamarca and will review all previously granted licenses

On July 5, 2018, CORTOLIMA issued Resolution No. 1963 “whereby it complies with the result of the popular consultation carried out in the municipality of Cajamarca”.

Based on the results of the popular consultation that took place in Cajamarca on March 26, 2017, where 97% of the electorate voted in favor of forbidding mining activities in the municipality, CORTOLIMA issued Resolution 1963 which provides that no new environmental licenses, water concessions, transfers and authorizations to use natural resources will be granted to undertake mining activities in the municipality of Cajamarca.

According to Resolution 1963, CORTOLIMA will also engage a technical and legal review of all environmental licenses, permits and authorizations granted prior to March 26, 2017. The purpose of such review would be is to revoke such licenses and permits, where necessary.

Finally, CORTOLIMA ordered that Resolution 1963 be taken into account in all proceedings related with any pending petitions for the granting of environmental licenses and permits, in order to reject them forthwith.
